Saloy Micro-hydro Project

Saloy, Philippines
This 24 kW micro-hydro project will bring residential electricity to about 750 people in 150 households. It will also rehabilitate about 62 acres in the rainforest highland area of the Davao City watershed. The electricity generated will power a corn, rice and coffee processor to generate income to enhance the sustainability of the project and bring added revenue to local farmers.

This project will replace emissions of roughly 169 tons of carbon dioxide to the environment annually in comparison to an equivalent diesel fuel system. An acre of rainforest sequesters about 300 tons of carbon. EnerGreen has funded this project, along with Green Empowerment.

The project in Saloy is organized by Yamog (which means "Morning Dew"), a Filipino NGO that has worked closely with the community to initiate the 24kW Saloy project will take 2 years to complete. The Saloy Farmers Multi-Purpose Cooperative continues to organize the community as construction begins at the site of the Saloy Community Micro Hydro Project. A committee has been formed of 8 women and 5 men that will oversee the completion of the project. They have participated in training that cover everything from policy making to micro hydro project maintenance. Four college students from a local university studying Forestry will gather data for 6 weeks and design a community work plan for the watershed rehabilitation aspect of the project.

Fundraising for this project will continue in the months ahead for this project. With continued support, this well-organized community is well on its way to developing a sustainable micro hydro project in Saloy.
