Shuar Solar Project: Phase 2

Yumisin and Ampam villages in the province of Morona Santiago of the Ecuadorian Amazonian Region

In May 2006, our team returned to the Shuar region of the Amazon to install 22 solar home systems in the villages of Yumisin and Ampam. Led by Fundacion Natura, the local Ecuadorian NGO, these villages had previously been identified as “in need” of sustainable energy systems to improve domestic and productive activities of the communities.

The largest village, Yumisin, with approximately 120 villagers previously without any source of power, hosted the site of a large hands-on technical training program for roughly 60 participants. These communities are highly motivated to take responsibility for the long term success of their community power solutions. The technical training is key to ensuring this success. The training format is part lecture, followed by the hands-on actual installations of the photovoltaic systems, thus the participants understand the infrastructure of the systems they must maintain.

Funding for phase 2 was achieved through the local NGO, a private funder and a grant from the Wildrose International Development fund of the Alberta Lotteries Funded Foundation to EnerGreen Foundation.
